A Nigerian soldier serving with the ECOWAS military intervention in the Gambia ( ECOMIG) code-named Operation Restore Democracy has died in the Gambia.

Staff Sergeant Abubakar Adullahi, 46, is reported to have died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to a statement from the ECOWAS mission, the Nigerian soldier experienced breathing difficulties in his sleep and was taken to hospital where he sadly died.

His remains are currently at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul and arrangements are being made to convey him to his native country for the necessary rites in accordance with national, traditional and military rites.

The late Staff Sergeant Abubakar Adullahi was among Nigerian soldiers who have joined their brothers in arms from other West African countries to resolve a breakdown of internal order in the government of the Gambia that resulted from a dispute over the country’s presidency. The dispute had led to a constitutional crisis in the country.
